Choose a lawyer who has experience doing what you need them to do. Probably the most important thing to consider is whether your lawyer has handled the type of case you need help with. Make sure to ask if they know the details of how to get the best results possible. When you interview your lawyer, ask questions about how they will develop your case strategy and their overall plan of how to resolve your case to your advantage.

Choose a lawyer with trial experience. The final arena for legal cases is the courtroom. If you choose a lawyer who has never gone to trial or who has only gone to trial a few times, you have started your case at a disadvantage. Even if your case doesn’t go to trial, you need a lawyer who knows how to win in a courtroom—if your opponent knows that your lawyer has very little trial experience, any threats of going to trial will not seem believable. On the other hand, if you choose a lawyer who has gone to trial hundreds of times (more than most prosecutors or insurance company attorneys), then you will begin your case from a position of strength which will usually translate into achieving better results.

Choose a lawyer who respects you as a client. You should choose a lawyer who is professional and courteous in dealing with you. At a minimum, you are entitled to have your calls returned promptly and your legal affairs explained clearly. Often, when you need a lawyer you are in a period of crisis or difficulty in your life. What separates good lawyers from extraordinary ones is whether the lawyer can get the best possible result and put your mind at ease and take some of the stress and worry about the case off of your shoulders.
